The Shadow We Live With: Understanding Depression Through Tania’s Eyes

Guys, today I came across this video by the Ukrainian actress Tania Galakhova, where she portrays what it’s like to live with depression. And honestly, it hit home. Some of us know exactly what that looks like; others don’t even realize they’re living it.

In her video, the black-dressed figure represents depression. She’s seated, surrounded by junk, scrolling her phone, and the figure lingers behind her. Probably TikTok. Maybe Instagram reels. Who knows? But it’s so real. You know those nights when you’re up scrolling, not even sure what you’re looking at? Sometimes it’s harmless, even therapeutic, you come across a Mugambi or Crazy Kennar skit and laugh till you forget your worries for a bit. That’s therapy.

But then there are those nights when you’re just there, scrolling endlessly, thread after thread, for hours in silence. That’s where it gets heavy. That’s when it’s no longer entertainment, it’s escape.

Then Tania does this scene, she’s in front of the mirror, brushing her teeth. Depression, that dark figure, suddenly grabs the toothpaste from her hand. And I felt that. Because brushing your teeth can be more than hygiene, it’s that moment where you whisper a quick prayer to the Big Guy upstairs, right? Morning or night, it’s your little reset. But sometimes, you find yourself zoning out in that mirror way longer than three minutes. Your body’s there, but your mind isn’t.

…And that’s what depression really looks like sometimes, being surrounded by people but still feeling painfully alone.

She goes on, she’s trying to leave the house, but the figure blocks the door. Haven’t we all been there? Those days when you just can’t. You lock yourself in, not because you’re lazy, but because the world feels too loud and your thoughts too heavy. And that’s okay, taking time alone helps, until it doesn’t. Because when you’re left alone too long, your thoughts start talking louder than the people outside.

Then there’s this part, she’s sitting with her friends. They’re laughing, talking, living. She’s right in the middle, but the black figure is behind her, covering her ears. She can’t hear them. And that’s what depression really looks like sometimes, being surrounded by people but still feeling painfully alone.

And the ending… she’s at an amusement park. The Ferris wheel spins, bright, colorful, full of life, and then depression hands her black glasses. Suddenly, the world turns gray. The wheel’s still spinning, but all she sees is black and white.

That’s what depression does. It drains the color out of things that used to sparkle.

Tania’s video isn’t just art, it’s a mirror. A reminder that sometimes, we’re not lazy, moody, or distant. We’re just… tired. Fighting invisible battles in plain sight.

So maybe it’s time to ask yourself, what color does your world spin in today?
